Thermodiffusion of interacting colloids. I. A statistical thermodynamics approach.

چکیده
The thermal diffusion coefficient of colloids consists of two additive contributions, one related to specific interactions between the surfaces of colloidal particles with solvent molecules, and a contribution due to interactions between the colloidal particles. In the present paper, the effect of intercolloidal particle interactions on their thermodiffusive behavior is discussed within a statistical thermodynamics framework. Transport coefficients are expressed in terms of the interaction potential between the colloidal spheres. A special feature of macromolecular systems is that this interaction potential is a potential of mean force, which is temperature dependent. It is shown that under certain conditions this implicit temperature dependence gives rise to negative Soret coefficients, that is, to diffusion of macromolecules to hot regions.

Thermodiffusion of interacting colloids. II. A microscopic approach.
A microscopic approach is presented to describe the contribution to the thermal diffusion coefficient of colloids due to intercolloidal particle interactions. An exact expression for the leading-order virial coefficient of the thermal diffusion coefficient of interacting colloidal spheres is derived in terms of the intercolloidal pair-interaction potential and hydrodynamic interaction functions...
متن کاملAdvances in Thermodiffusion and Thermophoresis (soret Effect) in Liquid Mixtures
Recent advances in thermodiffusion (Soret effect) in binary and higher multicomponent liquid mixtures are reviewed. The mixtures studied include the hydrocarbon, associating, molten metal and semiconductor, polymer, and DNA mixtures. The emphasis is placed on the theoretical works, particularly models based on the nonequilibrium thermodynamics, although other approaches such as the statistical,...
متن کاملThermodiffusion of charged colloids: single-particle diffusion.
An expression for the single-particle thermal diffusion coefficient of a charged colloidal sphere is derived on the basis of force balance on the Brownian time scale in combination with thermodynamics. It is shown that the single-particle thermal diffusion coefficient is related to the temperature dependence of the reversible work necessary to build the colloidal particle, including the core, t...

متن کاملTemperature dependence of thermodiffusion in aqueous suspensions of charged nanoparticles.
Measurements of particle flows driven by temperature gradients are conducted as a function of temperature on aqueous suspensions of polystyrene nanoparticles and proteins of T4 lysozyme and mutant variants of T4 lysozyme. The thermodiffusion coefficients are measured using a microfluidic beam deflection technique on suspensions with particle concentrations on the order of 1 vol %. At T < or ~ 2...
